The Right Dog Coat

The Right Dog Coat

Cool mornings, rainy walks and icy winds: the weather changes, and so do our dogs’ needs.

With Emilia, Cosima and Valentina, MiaCara offers three different solutions for the changing conditions throughout the year. From light warmth for the transitional seasons, to reliable protection on cold winter days, right through to a windproof and waterproof raincoat.

But which coat is right for your dog? And when does each type of protection make sense? This guid will help you make the right choice - taking into account the weather, activity level, material and of course, your dog's individual needs.

Does My Dog Need a Coat?

Not every dog needs a coat in colder weather. Dogs cope with cold, wind and wet in very different ways, and it comes
down to coat type, build, age, activity level, the length of your walk and the weather on the day.

Dogs with short coats or little undercoat tend to lose body heat faster when temperatures drop. Small or very slender dogs and older dogs can feel the cold more too.

But cold isn’t the only reason to reach for a dog coat. Wind draws heat away from the body more quickly, and a wet coat loses some of its insulating effect. That’s why even thick-coated dogs can benefit from a coat in heavy rain.

For the cool transitional season

When temperatures dip, but winter hasn’t quite arrived, Emilia is the perfect choice. This lightweight dog coat is made from soft bouclé with a wool blend, giving cosy warmth without feeling heavy or bulky. The breathable lining helps keep your dog comfortable. Emilia is designed for those in-between days, when a dog jumper isn’t quite enough but a thick winter coat would be too much. It’s the perfect choice for crisp autumn walks and chilly spring mornings.

A Winter Dog Coat for Cold Days

When temperatures really drop, Cosima is ideal for dogs that need extra warmth. This lightweight winter dog coat pairs a warm filling with a waterproof outer fabric, protecting against cold, snow and wet weather without restricting your dog’s movement. The filling delivers reliable warmth while staying light, so your dog stays cosy and free to move, even on the coldest winter walks.

A Dog Rain Coat for Wind and Rain

Some days call for protection rather than extra warmth. Valentina is a highly functional dog raincoat made from a high-tech 3-layer laminate, so it’s both windproof and waterproof. With a 10,000 mm water column rating, it keeps rain and damp out while staying light and flexible. An extra tummy cover and an extended hood add further protection from wind and rain, and the 2-way adjustable zip makes it easy to fit over any collar or harness.

How to Find the Right Size

Back length is the key measurement for a dog coat. Measure your dog while they’re standing, from the withers (the highest point between the shoulder blades) to the base of the tail.

Here’s how:

1. Have your dog stand still: ideally on a flat surface.

2. Locate the withers: the highest point between the shoulder blades.

3. Place the tape measure at the withers: run it along the spine to the base of the tail.

4. Note the measurement in centimetres: Use it to choose the right size for your dog.

Every dog is built differently. A light, long-legged dog can have a completely different shape to a compact dog of the same weight, so weight alone isn’t a reliable guide to coat size. That’s why MiaCara sizes by back length. The adjustment options then let you fine-tune the fit to your dog’s body.

Why Back Length rather Than Weight?

A good dog coat protects your dog without restricting natural movement. MiaCara coats include a range of adjustments to help you get there: adjustable collar, adjustable drawstrings, individually adjustable waist strap, elasticated leg loops, dual-adjustment zips, ergonomic cuts, stretch inserts for greater freedom of movement

Getting the Right Fit

Want to walk your dog in a coat while they’re wearing a harness? No problem. The 2-way adjustable zip lets the coat adapt to different collars and harnesses, so you don’t have to give up your usual gear when the weather turns.
